The Mercedes-Benz 380 SL (R107) is a two-seat roadster built from 1980 to 1985, powered by the all-alloy M116 3.8-litre V8 with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and a 4-speed automatic. European cars initially had a 3,818 cc engine rated at 218 PS, replaced from late 1981 by a 3,839 cc unit of 204 PS, while North American cars (model years 1981-1985, where it replaced the 450 SL) were rated at just 155 hp. With about 53,200 built it was the best-selling R107 variant; it was succeeded by the 420 SL in Europe and the 560 SL in the US for 1986.
The 380 SL offers the classic R107 shape, with its long bonnet, ribbed tail lights and removable hardtop, in the most numerous and therefore most accessible version of the series. Its V8 is smooth and unstressed rather than fast, and the mechanical K-Jetronic injection and simple manual soft top keep the car fundamentally straightforward to understand and maintain. Wide production numbers and strong club and specialist support mean good parts availability, making it a usable entry point into classic Mercedes SL ownership, provided the timing chain question has been addressed.
