Ferrari built 272 288 GTOs from 1984 to 1985 to homologate a Group B racing category that was cancelled before the car ever competed. Based loosely on the 308 GTB, it uses a longitudinally mounted 2.8-litre twin-turbo V8 with a tubular steel chassis and composite bodywork. It was the first Ferrari road car to reach 300 km/h class performance and the direct ancestor of the F40.
A homologation special in the purest sense, it was built for a racing class that never ran, leaving it as a pure expression of Maranello's turbocharged ambitions. Its Pininfarina-penned, wide-hipped silhouette and its role as the genesis of the F40 lineage give it enduring iconic status.
